I apologize for the rambly question but something has always bugged me about the baddies in Adventure. Just how connected were they with each other and the Dark Masters, if at all?
Devimon didn't really get involved with the kids until episode 8 and I first assumed he wanted the kids dead because they kept freeing the Digimon affected by the dark gears. But then you have Etemon talking about how he calculated where the kids should be appearing and how he plans on killing them from the get go. And then there's Devimon's warning of even stronger and more evil Digimon than him beyond File Island.
That would imply that all the baddies, from Devimon to Vamdemon, were in on the Dark Masters' agenda. However MetalEtemon and Pinocchimon fight each other while seemingly meeting for the first time. So that implies that all the baddies were independent.
Am I missing or forgetting some crucial lore here? If they weren't all in on it, what was their motivation for going after the kids when they barely knew anything about the digital world?

There’s nothing you’re missing, and honestly it’s a question that’s been eluding us for a while. Like I said, I think the last Adventure novel is really all we’ve got at the moment.

Okay so, canonically speaking, in Adventure while there are hints at The Villians Being In Cahoots, it is never explicitly confirmed during the story, and post-Adventure content would seem to go as far as suggest it wasn't canon at all.
But The Villians Being In Cahoots is canon in the novels, and while the novels did change some things around, you can also kinda see how the Cahoots-part could've worked out in Adventure
So we can look at Adventure in a vacuum and speculate about how it could've worked, but if we're being real, it could be confirmed to be Turbo Not-Canon in any future Adventure-verse installment so it kinda doesn't matter
But yes, the novels did confirm that all the villians were working under the Dark Masters, Devimon being under Piemon's army specifically. Devimon and Etemon had been given similar jobs, to spread infectious darkness through out the lands, Devimon filling the entire File Island with his Dark Gears and Etemon building and spreading the Dark Network. Considdering how the Digital World ends up being turned into the Spiral Mountain by the end, both of these things may have been steps in doing that (being able to move the entirety of File Island, where the Village of Beginings is, would've been an important duty).
Killing the Chosen may have been more of a side-task for them given when the kids came to the Digimon's respective territories (it probably would've become Vamdemon's job too if he hadn't been too busy waltzing off into the Human World), and Devimon and Etemon taking on that task differently may have been both a result of the difference in their personality (Devimon would've been in no-rush, Etemon was just aching to go), but also once Devimon got taken down Etemon would've been under a little more pressure, as the kids would've proven that they shouldn't be taken too easily.
As for why Metal Etemon decided to attack Pinocchimon, there's a few ways to look at it.
For one, it's possible Etemon might've been forced to work for the Masters with threats of violence, and considdering the difference in power levels, Etemon probably would've had no way to refuse. But after he evolved, he would've been on-par with the Masters. So add his wish for vengeance and blind rage to the mix, and suddenly he doesn't have to care about what his former employers had to say, since he had the ability to fight back.
Another thing is that we don't know whose army Etemon belonged into; like I kinda wanna make an assumption Etemon might've been under Mugendramon's Metal Empire, but regardless of who he was working for, as long as Etemon wasn't a part of the Wind Guardians then it is totally possible he and Pinocchimon had never met before. (Also Pinocchimon is tiny, so regardless of if Metal Etemon knew that was one of his employers or not, he could totally look at the kid and figure he could whoop his ass. It's not like going up against a mountain of steel or a giant sea serpent)
Third, we need to considder the source of Etemon's power, how he had evolved in the first place. See, it's possible Etemon might've evolved from the influence of Apolycalymon (as Apocalymon was the source of all the evil in the DW and had given power to the Dark Masters too, it's kiiinda implied that the darkness the Dark Network was spreading was from Apocalymon), and if he did...
"Apocalymon must have sent its thoughts through the “Wall of Fire” into the Digital world. It planted the idea into the Dark Masters’ minds to unconsciously reject “evolution.” The Dark Masters’ plan would permanently destroy the function of the Village of Beginnings. It was possible that, to the very end, they had been unaware of it.
In other words, the construction of Spiral Mountain took “evolution” away from the Digital World."
In Novel 3, Chapter 7 (New World) (linked by Shiha), it is said that Apocalymon must've been influencing the Dark Masters, making them do things that they wouldn't have done under normal circumstances. Like destroying the Village of Beginings; it seems like a smart move until you realize that by doing so they also sealed their own fates, ensuring that if any of them died, they too would remain dead, unable to be reborn.
So if Apocalymon's influence was making the Digimon lose their minds a little bit, making them do things that would result in as many others perma-dying as possible (which is kinda what Apocalymon wanted), and if Etemon was under that same influence... Yeah, Metal Etemon going for Pinocchimon could've been self-destructive behaviour.
There's also like other stuff like how we're told that Devimon hid the Crests and Tags, but then Vamdemon has the eight one for some bizarre reason, while we're explicitly shown Piemon stealing the Crests and Tags from Gennai. This would seem like a plothole but if the other two were both working for Piemon then it all kinda adds up and makes sense. Piemon stole them, gave Vamdemon the 8th Crest as a treat because he's a Special Boy with a Prophesy and told Devimon to hide the rest. It works out so neatly!
But yeah I think that's the TL;DR of The Villians Being In Cahoots-thing, I hope I might've illuminated the subject a little bit???
